Thanks for the comments, Marc. Madison was truly the intellect behind our government. Although bookish and sometimes socially awkward, his mind was always working on complex problems. In our current political dialogue, Jefferson and Franklin tend to get more “press,” but Madison was truly the heart, soul, and mind behind the national republican (in the 18th century sense of the word, not the modern political party) government. A Sunday afternoon game of chess with him would be an interesting experience indeed!

My wife and I went to Montpelier during our recent stay at Holladay House, and we saw the chess pieces. Our guide “Bob” explained the discovery of the discard chess piece fragments just as you did in your blog. We enjoyed our visit to Madison’s home and your B&B very much. Thanks for everything!

Nice. a recipe this good could not go unnoticed. I will have to bookmark this page to attempt the biscuits myself. There is no better smell than the aroma of fresh biscuits baking in the oven. I can appreciate the innkeeper “street cred” these biscuits give you.

Wow, so amazing. I love chess, it would be interesting to be able to sit in on a game between Madison and Jefferson. I like that Madison saw chess as more than a game, and chose to play on Sunday, what a great story. It must really be cool to be able to see an antique ivory chess game just like the ones played by Madison and Jefferson; too cool. What a unique antiquity.
